Taipei 101 launches the signature fireworks display during Taiwan’s New Year’s Eve countdown.
The skyscraper is in Taipei’s Xinyi District and is one of the city’s defining landmarks. Fireworks are fired from multiple levels of the building, turning its stepped exterior into a vertical display visible across the metropolitan area. The event is broadcast widely and has become a major symbol of Taiwan’s arrival at the new year.
Taipei 101 was officially opened in 2004 and was designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners. Its name refers to the 101 floors above ground, while its architecture incorporates features associated with traditional East Asian design and the bamboo plant.
The fireworks are not a permanent architectural feature; they are installed for the annual celebration. Taipei 101 is also often confused with the Shanghai Tower or the Burj Khalifa when people discuss spectacular Asian or global New Year displays, but those are separate skyscrapers and separate events.
