Which famous hotel in Banff National Park is built in the style of a Scottish baronial castle?
Answer
Fairmont Banff Springs
Answer
Fairmont Banff Springs
The famous Banff National Park hotel built in the style of a Scottish baronial castle is the Fairmont Banff Springs.
The hotel stands near Banff, Alberta, overlooking the Bow River valley and Mount Rundle in the Canadian Rockies. It began as a Canadian Pacific Railway hotel, opening in 1888 to encourage wealthy travelers to journey west by rail and experience the mountain scenery.
Its architecture is more layered than the quiz’s short description suggests. The original wooden building drew on Scottish baronial ideas, while later sections incorporated Châteauesque features inspired by French Loire Valley châteaux. Steep roofs, dormers, gables, turrets, heavy stonework, and dramatic massing give the complex its castle-like appearance.
The original structure was badly affected by a fire in 1926. Much of the present hotel dates from later construction, including a central tower completed in 1914 and replacement wings built in the late 1920s. It became a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988.
