The famous Hokusai print featuring a giant wave and Mount Fuji is The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Created by Katsushika Hokusai around 1830–1832, the print is formally known in Japanese as Kanagawa-oki nami ura, or Under the Wave off Kanagawa. It belongs to Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which explores the mountain from different locations and viewpoints.

The curling wave dominates the foreground, while Mount Fuji appears small and calm in the distance. Several boats and their rowers are caught beneath the wave, creating a dramatic contrast between human vulnerability, natural force, and the mountain’s apparent permanence. Hokusai’s use of imported Prussian blue also helped give the image its striking color.

The print is often called simply The Great Wave, but it is not a painting in the European oil-on-canvas sense. It is a multicolor ukiyo-e woodblock print produced through a collaborative process involving a designer, carver, printer, and publisher. Its influence later reached European artists including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
