Bausch & Lomb recalled ReNu MoistureLoc contact-lens solution in 2006 over reports of fungal eye infections.
The recall followed an unusual increase in cases of Fusarium keratitis, a serious fungal infection of the cornea. Many affected patients had used ReNu MoistureLoc, a multipurpose solution manufactured by Bausch & Lomb. The company suspended production and distribution while health authorities investigated.
Investigators did not conclude that every bottle was contaminated. Instead, laboratory and manufacturing reviews focused on the formulation and its ability to permit fungal survival under certain conditions. The episode damaged confidence in the product and led to its withdrawal from the market.
ReNu MoistureLoc should not be confused with all ReNu solutions. Bausch & Lomb marketed several formulations, and the 2006 action specifically centered on MoistureLoc.
