Which explorer completed the first circumnavigation of Earth’s oceans after departing with Magellan’s fleet?

The story behind the answer

Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of Earth’s oceans after departing with Magellan’s fleet.

Ferdinand Magellan led the expedition that left Spain in 1519, but he was killed in the Philippines in 1521. Elcano, a Basque mariner from Getaria, later took command of the surviving ship Victoria. He guided it westward across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Spain, arriving at Sanlúcar de Barrameda on 6 September 1522.

Only the Victoria completed the voyage, returning with 18 surviving crew members from an original fleet of five ships and roughly 270 men. The expedition demonstrated on a practical scale that the world could be circumnavigated by sea and provided major geographic information about the Pacific. Elcano received a coat of arms showing a globe and the motto “You first surrounded me.”
