Which expedition became the first to complete a circumnavigation of Earth in 1522?

The story behind the answer

The Magellan expedition became the first to complete a circumnavigation of Earth in 1522.

The fleet left Spain in 1519 under the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who was sailing for the Spanish Crown. Magellan found the strait at the southern tip of South America now called the Strait of Magellan and then crossed the Pacific Ocean. He was killed in the Philippines in 1521 before the voyage was finished.

Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the remaining ship, Victoria, and led it westward across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Spain. Victoria arrived at Sanlúcar de Barrameda on 6 September 1522, completing the first recorded circumnavigation.

Magellan himself did not circumnavigate the globe, so naming him alone as the person who completed the journey is inaccurate. The expedition also revealed the enormous scale of the Pacific and produced a famous calendar discrepancy: the returning crew had lost a day by travelling westward.
