Which expedition became the first to circumnavigate Earth after Ferdinand Magellan's death?

The story behind the answer

The Magellan expedition became the first to circumnavigate Earth after Ferdinand Magellan's death.

Magellan's expedition left Spain in 1519 with five ships, seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. It found the passage now called the Strait of Magellan, crossed the Pacific Ocean and reached the Philippines. Magellan was killed at the Battle of Mactan in 1521, before the voyage was complete.

Juan Sebastián Elcano then took command of the surviving ship, Victoria. It continued west through the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope and returned to Spain in September 1522. Only the Victoria completed the full circumnavigation; the other ships had been lost, abandoned or turned back.

The voyage demonstrated the practical global scale of Earth's oceans, although educated Europeans already knew Earth was spherical. It also revealed how difficult long-distance maritime travel was: the expedition suffered from disease, hunger, conflict and severe loss of crew.
