Which exchange was the main venue for the 1987 Black Monday crash?

The story behind the answer

The New York Stock Exchange was the main venue for the 1987 Black Monday stock-market crash.

On October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 508 points, or 22.6%, in its largest one-day percentage decline. Trading on the NYSE was overwhelmed by sell orders, while computer-based portfolio insurance strategies contributed to the speed and scale of the selling.

The crash was international. Markets in Hong Kong, Europe, Australia and other regions also suffered major falls, with time-zone differences making the event unfold over several trading sessions. The NYSE was therefore the best-known venue, not the only exchange affected.

The crash led to reforms intended to limit sudden market spirals. U.S. exchanges introduced circuit breakers, which can temporarily halt trading when indexes or securities move beyond specified thresholds.
