Which exchange suffered the famous 1873 crash that helped trigger a global financial depression?

The story behind the answer

The Vienna Stock Exchange suffered the famous 1873 crash that helped trigger a global financial depression.

On May 9, 1873, panic struck Vienna after years of speculative investment in railways, banks, and construction. The collapse followed the rapid expansion of credit and securities markets during Austria-Hungary’s economic boom. Numerous companies failed, and investor confidence deteriorated sharply.

The shock spread internationally. Financial distress reached Germany and the United States, where the failure of Jay Cooke & Company contributed to the Panic of 1873. The resulting downturn is often called the Long Depression, although historians debate its exact duration and severity in different countries.

The event is also known as the Gründerkrach, a German term referring to the founders’ crash. It is important not to confuse it with the U.S. Panic of 1873 alone: the Vienna collapse was an early and highly visible stage of a broader international financial crisis.
