Which exchange suffered the 1873 crash known as Black Friday in Vienna?
Answer
Vienna Stock Exchange
Answer
Vienna Stock Exchange
The Vienna Stock Exchange suffered the 1873 crash known as Black Friday in Vienna.
On May 9, 1873, speculative enthusiasm in Austria-Hungary collapsed on the Vienna Stock Exchange. The exchange had boomed after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and a wave of railway and construction investment. Many new companies attracted money despite weak or unrealistic business foundations.
The panic spread through banking and industrial markets, and numerous companies failed. It also damaged confidence in Germany and other economies. The event is often treated as the opening shock of the Long Depression, a period of prolonged weakness that affected much of the world during the late nineteenth century.
A frequent mix-up is associating the date only with the United States. The United States experienced its own major 1873 panic after the failure of Jay Cooke & Company in September, while the earlier Black Friday label refers specifically to Vienna's exchange crash.
