Which event was the final major land engagement of the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

The Siege of Yorktown was the final major land engagement of the American Revolutionary War.

The siege took place from September 28 to October 19, 1781, at Yorktown and Gloucester in Virginia. American forces led by George Washington joined French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau, while French naval forces helped prevent British relief by sea.

British Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis commanded the besieged army. Allied troops gradually tightened their lines and captured two important British redoubts on October 14. The resulting bombardment made the British position untenable, and Cornwallis's army surrendered on October 19.

Yorktown did not instantly end every military action. Fighting and naval operations continued elsewhere, but the surrender prompted peace negotiations and effectively ended major combat in North America. The conflict formally concluded with the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which recognized American independence. The Battle of Saratoga was a major earlier American victory, not the war's final major land engagement.
