Which European microstate is doubly landlocked by Switzerland and Austria?
Answer
Liechtenstein
Answer
Liechtenstein
Which European microstate is doubly landlocked by Switzerland and Austria? Liechtenstein. It is surrounded by two landlocked neighbors, so reaching a coastline requires crossing at least two international borders.
Liechtenstein lies in the Alps between Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. The Rhine forms its western boundary, but the river does not give the country access to the sea. This unusual geography makes Liechtenstein one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world; the other is Uzbekistan.
The principality was formed in 1719 and became fully independent when the German Confederation dissolved in 1866. Its capital is Vaduz, and German is the official language. Although Liechtenstein is not in the European Union, it belongs to the European Economic Area and Schengen Area. It also shares a customs and monetary union with Switzerland and uses the Swiss franc, another reason quizzes sometimes confuse it with its western neighbor.
