Which European country's flag is green, white, and orange?

The story behind the answer

Which European country's flag is green, white, and orange? Ireland. The national flag of Ireland is a vertical tricolour of green, white, and orange, with green nearest the flagpole.

The colours were intended to represent a hoped-for peaceful relationship between Ireland's major religious and political traditions. Green became associated with Irish nationalism and Catholics, orange with Protestants linked historically to William of Orange, and white with peace or a lasting truce between them.

The Irish tricolour was publicly displayed by Young Ireland leader Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848, inspired partly by the French tricolour. It gained much wider national recognition during the Easter Rising of 1916 and became the official flag of the Irish Free State in 1922. Ireland's Constitution gives the tricolour its constitutional status.

The flag is often confused with Italy's, which uses green, white, and red, or Ivory Coast's, which uses orange, white, and green. India also has orange, white, and green, but its horizontal design includes a blue Ashoka Chakra.
