Romania’s flag is a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow, and red with no coat of arms. The three equal bands run from the flagpole outward in that order, and the flag’s proportions are 2:3.
The colours were brought together during the Romanian national movement of the 19th century. Romania formally fixed the vertical arrangement in 1867, although earlier revolutionary flags used the same colours in different layouts. The modern plain tricolour returned after the 1989 Romanian Revolution, when communist-era symbols were removed.
A frequent mix-up is with Chad, whose flag is almost identical: both use blue, yellow, and red vertical bands. Chad’s blue is generally darker, while Romania’s design is traditionally distinguished by its specific colour standards. Andorra and Moldova also use similar vertical tricolours, but both place a coat of arms in the centre. Romania’s civilian national flag remains deliberately plain.
