Which European country is the only one to have a coastline on both the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea?

The story behind the answer

Russia is the only European country with coastlines on both the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Its Black Sea shoreline lies in the southwest, mainly along Krasnodar Krai and the Russian-controlled Crimean coast. Far to the west, Russia reaches the Baltic through Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave between Poland and Lithuania, and through the Gulf of Finland near Saint Petersburg.

The answer can be surprising because Russia is transcontinental: most of its territory lies in Asia, but a large western section is geographically European. Germany and Poland border the Baltic but have no Black Sea coast, while Ukraine borders the Black Sea but not the Baltic. Turkey has a Black Sea coast, yet lies far from the Baltic.

Russia’s position gives it access to several European seas as well as Arctic and Pacific waters. The Baltic connection is especially dependent on Kaliningrad, which is separated from Russia’s mainland by neighboring countries.
