Which European country is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world?

The story behind the answer

Liechtenstein is the European country that is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world.

A doubly landlocked country is surrounded entirely by countries that are themselves landlocked, so reaching an ocean requires crossing at least two international borders. Liechtenstein meets that definition because it is enclosed by Austria and Switzerland, neither of which has a coastline. The only other doubly landlocked country is Uzbekistan in Central Asia.

Liechtenstein’s unusual geography reflects its position in the Alps, between the Rhine River and the Austrian border. It is a small constitutional monarchy with Vaduz as its capital, and it has no direct access to the sea. A common mix-up is Luxembourg: although Luxembourg is landlocked and borders three countries, Belgium, France, and Germany, Belgium and France have coastlines, so Luxembourg is not doubly landlocked.
