Which European country is officially also known by the short name Czechia?
Answer
Czech Republic
Answer
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is officially also known by the short English name Czechia.
The country adopted its long-form English name, the Czech Republic, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia at the end of 1992. Czechia is the corresponding short geographic name, much as “France” is used alongside the formal name “the French Republic.” The Czech government directed official use of Czechia in English in 2016.
Both names remain valid, but they are not interchangeable in every setting. “The Czech Republic” is the formal political name, while Czechia is the short name preferred for many maps, databases, sports listings, and international references. The native short name is Česko.
Czechia should not be confused with Slovakia, its former partner in Czechoslovakia, or with Bohemia, which is only the country’s western historical region. Prague is the capital, and the country is landlocked between Germany, Poland, Austria, and Slovakia.
