Which European country is home to the Eiffel Tower?

The story behind the answer

Which European country is home to the Eiffel Tower? France. The tower stands on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France, and is one of the country's most recognisable national symbols.

Designed by Gustave Eiffel's engineering company, the structure was built between 1887 and 1889 as the centrepiece of the Exposition Universelle, a World's Fair celebrating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It opened to visitors in May 1889.

The Eiffel Tower is made from wrought iron and was about 300 metres tall when completed, making it the world's tallest man-made structure until New York's Chrysler Building surpassed it in 1930. It is often called La dame de fer, or “the Iron Lady.”

A common mix-up is confusing the tower's location with the country it represents: Paris is the city, while France is the country. The tower has also played practical roles, including radio transmission, helping preserve it after some critics initially considered its design temporary and unattractive.
