Which European country is home to Mount Elbrus?
Answer
Russia
Answer
Russia
Russia is the European country that is home to Mount Elbrus. The mountain stands in the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia, within the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, close to the border with Georgia.
Elbrus is a dormant stratovolcano with two summits. Its western summit reaches 5,642 metres, while the eastern summit rises to 5,621 metres. It is generally regarded as the highest mountain in Europe, although the Europe–Asia boundary in the Caucasus is debated by some geographers.
The mountain is also one of the Seven Summits, the highest peak on each continent under the commonly used continental model. Its first recorded ascent of the eastern summit took place in 1829, led by the Circassian guide Killar Khashirov. A British expedition reached the western summit in 1874.
A frequent mistake is choosing Georgia because the Caucasus lies near Georgia and the mountain is close to the international border. Mount Elbrus itself, however, is on Russian territory. It is a dormant volcano, not an active one; its last known eruption occurred roughly 2,000 years ago.
