Which European country is famous for its fjords?

The story behind the answer

Which European country is famous for its fjords? Norway. Norway is renowned for its long, steep-sided fjords, many of which cut deep into the country's mountainous western coastline.

Fjords are narrow sea inlets formed when glaciers carve valleys into bedrock and later retreat, allowing seawater to flood the valleys. Norway's fjords were shaped over repeated ice ages, leaving dramatic cliffs, deep water, waterfalls, and branching arms.

Among the best known are the Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sognefjord is Norway's longest and deepest fjord, extending roughly 205 kilometres inland. The Hardangerfjord is also famous for orchards, waterfalls, and mountain scenery.

Greenland and Iceland also have fjord landscapes, and Sweden has some coastal inlets, but Norway is the classic answer because fjords are central to its geography, tourism, history, and national image. The word “fjord” itself comes from Old Norse and is related to a verb meaning “to travel across” or “to cross.”
