Which European country hosted Wilbur Wright’s influential 1908 flying demonstrations at Le Mans?

The story behind the answer

France hosted Wilbur Wright’s influential 1908 flying demonstrations at Le Mans.

Wilbur traveled to France after European skepticism and patent negotiations had limited recognition of the brothers’ achievements. At the Hunaudières racecourse near Le Mans, he began flights in August 1908 and soon demonstrated control, turning, and sustained operation that impressed experienced observers.

The French demonstrations transformed public and expert opinion. European aviators and engineers could now see the Wright system operating repeatedly rather than relying only on reports from the 1903 event. Wilbur’s flights also helped establish the brothers’ international reputation and influenced the development of European aviation.

France was not the only European country connected with the Wrights. They also worked with people in Germany, Britain, and elsewhere. The specific 1908 Le Mans demonstrations, however, took place in France.
