Which European country has Mount Triglav as its highest mountain?

The story behind the answer

Slovenia is the European country whose highest mountain is Mount Triglav.

Triglav rises to about 2,864 metres in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia. Its name is commonly interpreted as “three-headed,” reflecting the mountain's distinctive shape. It is the centrepiece of Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park, and appears on the country's coat of arms and flag.

The mountain has deep national symbolism. Before Slovenia became independent in 1991, Triglav was the highest peak in Yugoslavia. The first recorded ascent took place in 1778, led by an expedition associated with the industrialist and polymath Sigmund Zois. The summit remains a popular but demanding hiking and climbing destination.

The main confusion is regional: Triglav is not Austria's highest mountain, nor Croatia's or Slovakia's. It is the highest point of Slovenia and also the highest summit of the Julian Alps, a range extending across Slovenia and Italy.
