Which European city is divided by the Bosporus Strait?
Answer
Istanbul
Answer
Istanbul
Istanbul is the European city divided by the Bosporus Strait.
Istanbul occupies land on both sides of the Bosporus, with one part in Europe and the other in Asia. The strait connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and forms part of the boundary commonly used between Europe and Asia. Istanbul is therefore often described as a transcontinental city.
The city was founded as Byzantium, became Constantinople under the Roman and Byzantine empires, and officially adopted the name Istanbul in the modern Turkish period. It served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire and later the Ottoman Empire, although Ankara became the capital of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
Important landmarks include Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Topkapı Palace. Istanbul’s bridges and ferries connect its two continental sides, while the Bosporus remains one of the world’s busiest strategic waterways.
