Vienna hosts the Vienna Philharmonic's famous New Year's Concert.
The concert is performed in the Musikverein's Golden Hall and is best known for waltzes, polkas, and marches by the Strauss family and related composers. It is traditionally held on January 1, although preview performances take place beforehand. The event is broadcast internationally and has become one of the most recognizable classical-music celebrations associated with the new year.
The first concert in the modern tradition took place on January 1, 1941, conducted by Clemens Krauss. After World War II, the program increasingly emphasized the music of Johann Strauss II and his relatives, helping create its distinctive Viennese identity.
The concert is sometimes called a New Year's Eve event because it belongs to the holiday period, but its principal performance is on New Year's Day. The program also usually ends with Strauss's “Radetzky March,” during which the audience traditionally claps along.
