Which European capital stands on the River Vltava and is known for its historic Charles Bridge?

The story behind the answer

Prague is the European capital on the River Vltava known for its historic Charles Bridge.

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Its historic core includes Prague Castle, the Old Town, and Charles Bridge, which crosses the Vltava and links the Old Town with the Lesser Town. Construction of the present stone bridge began in 1357 under King Charles IV.

The bridge is decorated with a long sequence of Baroque statues, most of which were added from the late 17th century onward. Prague is sometimes confused with Bratislava when discussing Central European capitals, but Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and lies on the Danube. Prague's historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.
