Which estate in Brunei is the world's largest residential palace by floor area?
Answer
Istana Nurul Iman
Answer
Istana Nurul Iman
Istana Nurul Iman is the world's largest residential palace by floor area.
The palace is the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei and sits southwest of Bandar Seri Begawan, the country's capital. Its name means “Light of Faith” in Malay. The complex was designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin and completed in 1984, the year Brunei became fully independent from the United Kingdom.
Istana Nurul Iman contains extensive ceremonial, administrative, and residential facilities. Its scale includes hundreds of rooms, a large banquet hall, a mosque, and a substantial garage. The building is also used for official events and audiences, not simply as a private household.
It is often compared with famous European palaces, but the relevant record is specifically residential floor area. Palace rankings can differ depending on whether they measure total floor space, grounds, historic importance, or public accessibility.
