Which English city is the main city served by the Tyne and Wear Metro?

The story behind the answer

Newcastle upon Tyne is the main English city served by the Tyne and Wear Metro.

The Tyne and Wear Metro is a light-rail rapid-transit network in north-east England. It serves Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland, but Newcastle is its principal urban centre and a major interchange point. The system links the city centre with suburban communities, the coast and Newcastle International Airport.

The Metro opened in stages beginning in 1980. Its planners adapted parts of the former Tyneside Electrics railway network and added new underground sections through central Newcastle and Gateshead. The first route ran between Haymarket and Tynemouth; the network later expanded to the airport in 1991 and Sunderland in 2002.

A common mix-up is treating the Metro as a conventional underground railway. Much of it runs above ground, and the system is officially a light-rail and rapid-transit network. Newcastle Central Station also connects it with national rail services, making the city the network’s key transport hub.
