Which English church contains the famous medieval stained-glass panels known as the Fairford windows?
Answer
St Mary’s Church, Fairford
Answer
St Mary’s Church, Fairford
St Mary’s Church, Fairford contains the famous medieval panels known as the Fairford windows.
The church in Fairford, Gloucestershire, preserves a near-complete set of early sixteenth-century windows depicting biblical scenes and saints. They were made for the church around 1500–1515 and are widely regarded as one of the most important surviving collections of medieval stained glass in England.
The windows are traditionally associated with the workshop of Barnard Flower, who was appointed King’s Glazier to Henry VII. Their survival is remarkable because English medieval glass was damaged or removed during the Reformation, the Civil War, and later renovations. Fairford’s rural setting helped preserve the ensemble.
The church is sometimes confused with Gloucester Cathedral, another important center of English medieval glass. Gloucester has major surviving windows, but the group specifically called the Fairford windows belongs to St Mary’s Church in Fairford.
