The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) is Africa’s most endangered carnivore and one of the world’s rarest canids. It lives in high-altitude Afroalpine grasslands and moorlands, generally above 3,000 metres, where it specializes in hunting rodents such as the big-headed mole-rat. Its narrow muzzle and reddish coat can make it look fox-like, leading to older names such as “Simien fox” and “red jackal.”

Unlike the widespread gray wolf, the Ethiopian wolf has a very restricted range: scattered mountain populations in Ethiopia, including the Bale and Simien Mountains. Habitat conversion for farming, overgrazing, roads, and diseases transmitted by domestic dogs—especially rabies and canine distemper—are major threats. It is commonly confused with the golden wolf, which also occurs in Ethiopia but is more widespread and ecologically generalist.
