Which empire built the road network centered on the city of Rome?
Answer
Roman Empire
Answer
Roman Empire
The Roman Empire built the road network centered on the city of Rome.
Roman roads connected Italy with provinces across Europe, North Africa and western Asia. They supported troop movements, administration, trade and communication. Major routes were often carefully surveyed, layered with stone and marked by milestones.
The saying “all roads lead to Rome” reflects Rome's role as the imperial center, not a literal claim that every road reached the city. Some Roman roads remain in use or visible today, including the Via Appia, begun in 312 BCE. Road construction continued as Roman territory expanded and changed.
