Which emotion is voiced by Amy Poehler?

Joy is one of the five personified emotions inside Riley Andersen’s mind and initially serves as the group’s energetic leader. She works from Headquarters alongside Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, trying to keep Riley optimistic while her family adjusts to a move across the country.

Poehler’s performance gives Joy a fast-talking, enthusiastic personality, but the character’s role becomes more complicated as the story develops. Joy begins by treating Sadness as a problem to contain; her journey eventually shows that difficult emotions can also be essential to understanding experiences and seeking support.

Joy is sometimes confused with Sadness because both characters are central to the film’s emotional arc, and Amy Poehler is also associated with comedy roles outside Pixar. In the movie, however, Phyllis Smith voices Sadness, while Poehler is specifically the voice of Joy.
