Quenya is the Elvish language associated with the Ñoldor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Tolkien developed Quenya as a constructed language with extensive vocabulary, grammar, and sound patterns. It was inspired partly by Finnish, and its name is related to the idea of speech or language. In the mythology, Quenya developed from the speech of the Elves who lived in Valinor.
The Ñoldor brought Quenya to Middle-earth, where it became a language of lore and ceremony rather than the everyday speech of most Elves. Sindarin, another major Elvish language, became more widely spoken in much of Middle-earth.
Quenya and Sindarin are often confused because both are prominent Tolkien languages. Quenya is the more archaic, formal language in many contexts, while Sindarin generally occupies the role of the common Elvish language in The Lord of the Rings.
