Which element is named after chemist Glenn T. Seaborg?

The story behind the answer

Which element is named after chemist Glenn T. Seaborg? Seaborgium is the answer. It is element 106, with the symbol Sg, and honours the American nuclear chemist Glenn T. Seaborg.

Seaborg was a central figure in the discovery and study of transuranium elements. He helped discover several elements beyond uranium and contributed to the actinide concept, which reorganized the periodic table by placing the actinides beneath the lanthanides. Naming element 106 after him recognized that influence.

Seaborgium is synthetic and highly radioactive, so it is made only a few atoms at a time in laboratories. It belongs to group 6 and is expected to resemble tungsten, its lighter chemical analogue. Experiments have produced a small number of compounds, but the atoms decay so rapidly that ordinary bulk samples are impossible.

The name was not immediately accepted. Discovery priority and naming rights were disputed between American and Soviet laboratories after the element was produced in 1974. IUPAC settled the matter in 1997. Seaborgium is especially notable because Seaborg was still alive when the element named for him received official recognition.
