Korra is initially unable to bend air.
At the start of The Legend of Korra, she has already learned waterbending, earthbending, and firebending, but airbending remains beyond her reach. Because she is the Avatar, mastering all four elements is essential; her unfinished training brings her to Republic City to study under Tenzin, Aang’s youngest son and the only living airbending master at that point.
Air is difficult for Korra not because she lacks physical ability, but because its philosophy conflicts with her forceful, headstrong personality. Airbending emphasizes movement, evasion, flexibility, and spiritual openness, while Korra initially prefers direct confrontation and decisive attacks. Her struggle is therefore both technical and personal.
During the first-season finale, Korra unexpectedly unlocks airbending while trying to save Mako from Amon. The breakthrough helps expose Amon’s deception and begins Korra’s path toward becoming a fully realized Avatar. A common mistake is saying she cannot bend water, fire, or earth; those are the three elements she commands before the series begins.
