MotoE was introduced as an electric motorcycle World Cup in 2019.
The series was created as a support championship for MotoGP, giving electric racing motorcycles a place in the Grand Prix paddock. Its official inaugural name was the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, and every rider used the same Energica Ego Corsa machine during the first season.
The 2019 calendar was disrupted by a fire at the Jerez circuit in March that destroyed all the championship motorcycles. The opening races were postponed, and the revised season ultimately ran from July to November. Matteo Ferrari became the first MotoE World Cup winner.
MotoE is sometimes confused with Moto2 or Moto3, but those are conventional internal-combustion motorcycle classes. MotoE is also not the same as a manufacturer-specific series: it was a championship for electric prototypes supplied under a controlled technical format.
