Answer
Eid al-Fitr
Which Eid marks the end of Ramadan and is distinct from Eid al-Adha? Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is the other major Islamic festival besides Eid al-Adha.
It falls on 1 Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, after the month of dawn-to-sunset fasting. Because the lunar calendar is shorter than the Gregorian calendar, its date moves earlier by roughly 10 or 11 days each year.
The celebration commonly begins with a congregational Eid prayer, followed by family visits, festive meals, gifts and charitable giving. Zakat al-Fitr, a special charity associated with the holiday, is generally given before the prayer so people in need can share in the celebration.
A common mix-up is confusing the two main Eids. Eid al-Fitr follows Ramadan, while Eid al-Adha occurs during the Hajj season on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah and commemorates Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to sacrifice. The word “Fitr” is linked to breaking the fast.
