Which economist received the 1983 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for incorporating new analytical methods into economic theory?

The story behind the answer

Gérard Debreu received the 1983 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for incorporating new analytical methods into economic theory and for his rigorous reformulation of general equilibrium theory.

Debreu used mathematical methods to analyze how markets can reach equilibrium when consumers and producers make decisions across many goods and contingencies. His work gave economic theory a highly precise framework for studying existence, stability, and efficiency.

He became the first person born in France to receive the economics prize. Debreu spent much of his academic career in the United States and was associated particularly with the University of California, Berkeley.

General equilibrium does not mean that every real-world market is permanently balanced. It is a theoretical model describing conditions under which prices can coordinate many markets simultaneously.
