Which earlier national anniversary did America’s 2026 Semiquincentennial follow?

The story behind the answer

America’s 2026 Semiquincentennial followed the United States Bicentennial of 1976.

The Bicentennial celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and culminated on July 4, 1976. Planning began much earlier, after Congress created the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission in 1966. Official events began in April 1975 and continued through the anniversary year.

The 1976 observance featured fireworks, parades, historical reenactments, exhibitions, and Operation Sail, an international gathering of tall ships. President Gerald Ford participated in national celebrations, including events in Washington, D.C., and New York Harbor.

The two anniversaries use different names because they mark different milestones. “Bicentennial” means 200 years, while “Semiquincentennial” means 250 years. The 2026 celebration therefore continued a recurring pattern of large national commemorations tied to the Declaration of Independence.
