Which earldom did Harold Godwinson inherit from his father Godwin in 1053?

The story behind the answer

Harold Godwinson inherited the earldom of Wessex from his father Godwin in 1053.

Godwin had been one of the most powerful nobles in England and had held the earldom of Wessex under King Cnut and his successors. When Godwin died in 1053, Harold succeeded him. The inheritance made Harold the leading lay noble in England and placed him at the centre of royal politics under Edward the Confessor.

Harold’s power grew through military leadership, family connections, and control of extensive lands. He later became Earl of Hereford as well, and his brother Gyrth and other relatives held important positions. This concentration of influence helped explain both Harold’s authority and the opposition faced by the Godwin family.

The title is sometimes phrased as “Earl of Wessex,” while the question asks for the “earldom of Wessex.” They refer to the same underlying fact: Harold inherited the office and territory associated with Wessex. He was crowned king in January 1066 and died at Hastings later that year.
