Which eagles rescue Bilbo and the dwarves from wolves and goblins?

The story behind the answer

The Great Eagles rescue Bilbo and the dwarves from wolves and goblins. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the company is trapped in trees while Wargs and goblins surround them in the eastern Misty Mountains. The Eagles arrive after hearing the commotion and carry the travelers to safety.

These giant birds are among Middle-earth’s oldest and most powerful creatures. Their lord, often identified as the Lord of the Eagles, helps Gandalf and the company during the escape. The rescue does not take them all the way to the Lonely Mountain; they are set down near the Carrock, where Beorn later gives them aid.

A common mix-up is to choose Mearas, Crebain, or Fellbeasts. Mearas are exceptional horses, Crebain are spying crows or ravens, and Fellbeasts are the winged creatures ridden by the Nazgûl. The Great Eagles are distinct from all three and also appear in The Lord of the Rings, including the rescue after the destruction of the Ring.
