Which eagle is the national bird of Indonesia?

The story behind the answer

The Javan hawk-eagle is the national bird of Indonesia.

Indonesia designated it as the country’s national bird in 1993. In Indonesian, it is called Elang Jawa, meaning “Javan eagle,” and it is closely associated with the island of Java.

The species has a distinctive pointed crest, dark brown upperparts, and a lighter underside marked with dark barring. It lives mainly in forest and feeds on birds, mammals, reptiles, and other small animals. Habitat loss has made conservation a major concern.

The Javan hawk-eagle’s scientific name is Nisaetus bartelsi. It is endemic to Java, meaning that its natural range is restricted to that island. Its protected status reflects the pressure placed on Java’s remaining forests.
