Which eagle is the largest living eagle by body mass?

The story behind the answer

Steller’s sea eagle is the largest living eagle by body mass.

This massive sea eagle inhabits coastal northeastern Asia, especially areas around Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the Sea of Okhotsk, and Japan. Adults have a dark brown body, striking white shoulders and tail, and a large yellow bill and feet. Some individuals weigh more than nine kilograms, although females are larger than males.

Steller’s sea eagles feed heavily on fish, particularly salmon in parts of their range. They also take waterbirds, mammals, carrion, and other available prey. Their size helps them dominate feeding areas, but they still rely on seasonal food supplies and productive coastal and river habitats.

The species faces threats from habitat degradation, pollution, disturbance, and changes in prey availability. Its conservation status reflects these pressures. “Largest eagle” can mean different things if measured by wingspan, length, or mass, but Steller’s sea eagle is the standard answer for greatest body mass among living eagles.
