Which eagle is the largest bird of prey native to the Philippines by wingspan?

The story behind the answer

The Philippine eagle is the largest bird of prey native to the Philippines by wingspan.

Also called the monkey-eating eagle, it is a giant forest eagle with a crest of long feathers, powerful feet, and a very large bill. Its wingspan can reach roughly 2.2 metres, although its broad wings are adapted for maneuvering through forest rather than for long-distance soaring.

The species is endemic to the Philippines and survives on several major islands, including Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. It hunts mammals, birds, reptiles, and other forest animals. Despite its traditional nickname, monkeys are not its only or necessarily its main prey.

The Philippine eagle is critically endangered because logging, habitat conversion, and hunting have reduced its forest habitat. Conservation programs protect nesting pairs and raise public awareness. It should not be confused with the Philippine serpent eagle, a smaller forest raptor found in the same country.
