Which eagle is the heaviest living eagle species?
Answer
Steller’s sea eagle
Answer
Steller’s sea eagle
Steller’s sea eagle is the heaviest living eagle species.
Haliaeetus pelagicus is a massive sea eagle native mainly to northeastern Asia. Adults have a dark body, striking white shoulders and tail, and a large yellow bill. The species is especially associated with coastal areas and major rivers around the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk.
Fish, particularly salmon, form an important part of its diet. Steller’s sea eagles also take water birds and mammals, and they readily consume carrion. Their heavy build distinguishes them from more slender eagles, although exact body mass varies with sex, season, and food availability.
The eagle’s breeding range is concentrated in Russia, with smaller populations and regular wintering birds in Japan, China, and the Korean Peninsula. Habitat alteration, pollution, disturbance, and declining fish resources can threaten local populations. It is classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
