Which eagle is endemic to the island of New Guinea?

The story behind the answer

The Papuan eagle is endemic to the island of New Guinea.

This little-known eagle inhabits tropical forests and forest edges across Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian province of Papua. Its restricted island range makes it one of the region’s distinctive endemic birds of prey.

The species is a large forest eagle with broad wings and strong feet. It hunts mammals, birds, and reptiles, using perches within or above the forest canopy. Like many tropical raptors, it can be difficult to study because dense vegetation and low population densities make sightings uncommon.

The Papuan eagle has also been known by older names, including New Guinea eagle. Habitat conversion, logging, and disturbance can affect its forest environment. It should not be confused with the wedge-tailed eagle of Australia, whose range does not include New Guinea.
