Which eagle appears on Zambia’s national flag?

The story behind the answer

The African fish eagle appears on Zambia’s national flag.

The bird is a prominent symbol in Zambia and is shown in the flag’s orange section, representing the country’s natural resources. Its bold black, white, and chestnut plumage also makes it one of Africa’s most recognizable raptors.

African fish eagles live near lakes, rivers, and wetlands across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Fish are their principal food, although they also take birds, reptiles, and carrion. They often seize fish from the water with their powerful talons while perched near the shoreline.

The species is sometimes confused with the bald eagle because both have white heads and tails. They are different species, however, and the African fish eagle is native to Africa rather than North America. Zambia’s flag was adopted at independence in 1964, and its eagle symbolizes the ability to rise above national challenges.
