The House of Habsburg ruled the Holy Roman emperors opposed by the Bohemian rebels. The Bohemian Revolt challenged Habsburg control of the Kingdom of Bohemia and rejected the succession of the strongly Catholic Ferdinand of Styria.
The Habsburgs were one of Europe's most influential dynasties. Through inheritance, election, and strategic marriages, they accumulated territories across Central Europe, including Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, and parts of the Low Countries and Spain. Their power made disputes in Bohemia important far beyond the kingdom itself.
Bohemian Protestants feared Ferdinand would overturn the religious protections associated with the Letter of Majesty issued by Emperor Rudolf II in 1609. Ferdinand was elected king of Bohemia in 1617, but the rebels later deposed him and selected Frederick V of the Palatinate. After the imperial victory at White Mountain in 1620, Ferdinand's position was secured.
The House of Wittelsbach, another major German dynasty, supported Frederick V, while the Bourbon and Vasa dynasties belonged to different political and dynastic struggles. The relevant imperial dynasty here is therefore specifically the Habsburgs.
