Which dwarf sewed Loki's lips shut as a wager?

The story behind the answer

Brokkr is the dwarf who sewed Loki’s lips shut after winning a wager against him. The episode appears in Snorri Sturluson’s Skáldskaparmál, where Loki boasts that the Sons of Ivaldi cannot be surpassed as craftsmen. Brokkr counters that his brother Eitri can make objects even more remarkable, so the two sides wager their heads on the result.

While Eitri works at the forge, Brokkr operates the bellows. Loki, disguised as a biting insect or gadfly, repeatedly attacks him to make him stop. Brokkr keeps working despite bites to his hand and neck, but a final bite to his eye causes a brief interruption while Mjölnir is being made. That pause leaves Thor’s hammer with a shortened handle, although the gods still judge the creations superior.

Loki technically escapes losing his head by arguing that the wager did not include his neck. Brokkr therefore punishes him by stitching his lips together so he cannot continue boasting. Sindri is often confused with Brokkr, but Sindri—or Eitri in some traditions—is the brother and master smith, not the dwarf who performs the sewing.
