Which dwarf is painfully shy?

The story behind the answer

Bashful is the painfully shy dwarf in Disney’s *Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs*.

His name directly reflects his personality. Bashful is sentimental, easily embarrassed, and often blushes when Snow White or the other dwarfs focus attention on him. He is also portrayed as kind-hearted and romantic, with a crush on Snow White. These traits distinguish him from the other dwarfs, whose names likewise describe their dominant characteristics.

Bashful is sometimes confused with Dopey because both can seem quiet or less assertive. Dopey, however, is the youngest dwarf, accident-prone, bald, and notably mute. Sleepy is another possible distraction, but his defining trait is constant tiredness rather than shyness. Bashful’s bashfulness is especially visible in his reactions during the dwarfs’ introductions and social scenes.

The character was voiced in the original film by Scotty Mattraw. Along with Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, and Dopey, Bashful forms the seven-dwarf ensemble created for Disney’s 1937 animated classic.
