Which dwarf is a member of the Fellowship?

The dwarf who is a member of the Fellowship is Gimli, son of Glóin. He represents the Dwarves among the nine companions chosen to help Frodo Baggins destroy the One Ring.

Gimli first appears at the Council of Elrond, where he arrives with his father. After the Council decides that the Ring must be taken to Mount Doom, Gimli volunteers to join the journey. His knowledge, strength, axe-work, and ability to endure underground travel prove valuable, especially in Moria and later battles.

At first, Gimli is suspicious of Elves because of the long hostility between Dwarves and Elves. His friendship and rivalry with Legolas gradually overcome that distrust. Their relationship becomes one of the clearest examples of old divisions healing during the War of the Ring.

Balin and Dwalin are important Dwarves connected with the history of Erebor and Moria, but neither belongs to the Fellowship. Thorin Oakenshield leads the company in The Hobbit and dies before the events of The Lord of the Rings. After Sauron’s defeat, Gimli becomes Lord of the Glittering Caves and eventually sails west with Legolas.
